“William Shakespeare was not of an age but for all time”

It is in the beauty of literature that we discover the doors of imagination and understanding and above all, to feel the way others feel. The English Department of Chennai Public School – Thirumazhisai brought the students closer to Shakespearean literature and its universal appeal through a flurry of literary activities held on December 7 and 8 of 2017.

The prime motive in organizing this event was to create an understanding and awareness of the importance of reading the great literary works of William Shakespeare. There was excitement in the air as the children were transported to William Shakespeare’s world.

The school wore a festive look with colorful charts and students’ works on display. The primary and middle school students amazed everyone with their creative posters and collage work, a veritable pot-pourri of their favorite Shakespearean tales. One could only marvel at the way the students of classes1 and 2 majestically strutted on the ramp, all dressed in the part of Shakespearean characters. The vibrant costumes and flamboyant accessories drew praises from the audience.

The highlight of the literary celebrations was the competition in Monologue and One-act play. The inter-house competition saw the students of the secondary and senior secondary school vie with one another in bringing Shakespearean characters to life through their words and expression. The arena was magically transformed into a scintillating medley of characters, straight from the pages of popular works of Shakespeare. The scenes of a love smitten Olivia, a vengeful Mark Antony, the confident yet vulnerable Julius Caesar, the wise Portia et al – aided in no less measure by their co-actors, innovative props and even ingenious back ground music- made a thoroughly enjoyable time for the audience. The Principal, Mrs.Chitrakala Ramachandran appreciated the innovative ideas and histrionic skills of the students and heaped praises on their efforts.

The literary fete was indeed a microcosm of Model Shakespeare’s Globe.
